PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a printing apparatus capable of ensuring uniformity by using printing paper narrower than the overall width of the exposure area of an exposure head. SOLUTION: An optical path alteration mechanism K is disposed at the end in the main scanning direction of the exposure head H, the optical path alteration mechanism K being freely switched between the optical path alteration position where a light beam from the exposure end is changed in position to the middle in the main scanning direction and then it is emitted and the retracting position where the optical path of a light beam from the exposure end is not changed in position. When a test chart is formed, a single sheet of printing paper P is subject to a main exposure process in which the optical path alteration mechanism K is set to the retracting position and exposure is carried out for test chart data, and an auxiliary exposure process in which the optical path alteration mechanism K is set to the optical path alteration position and exposure is carried out for the test chart data.
