PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head driving device of an inkjet printer which can detect a state of a nozzle in real time from residual oscillation by detecting the residual oscillation after driving of a piezoelectric actuator also to the nozzle which does not eject ink droplets, and to provide a head driving method. SOLUTION: A drive signal for inspection COMtest which drives the piezoelectric actuator 22 while preventing the ink droplet from being ejected is arranged and output before a drive signal COM for ejecting the ink droplet. Either or both of the drive signal COM and the drive signal for inspection COMtest is selected according to printing data SIH and inspection nozzle selecting data SIL, which is supplied to the piezoelectric actuator 22. When the piezoelectric actuator 22 is driven, according to the drive signal for inspection COMtest, the volume of a cavity 23 is enlarged to bring in the ink at a rise of the drive signal. The residual oscillation generated in the cavity 23 is detected while the enlarged volume of the cavity 23 is retained.
