PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve workability of assembling works of a backlight device, and to reduce a working space necessary for the assembling works.

SOLUTION: In this backlight device, openings 21 for inserting a plurality of fluorescent tubes 3 illuminated by power supply from a prescribed power source into gripping parts 22 of a lamp holder Y are formed so that they are facing almost a vertical direction in a state where a supporting member for supporting the lamp holder Y is nearly upright. In the attaching works of the fluorescent tubes 3 to the lamp holder, the supporting member is held in a state where the supporting member is nearly upright, and the fluorescent tubes 3 are fitted from the nearly vertical direction into the gripping parts 22 of the lamp holder Y supported by the supporting member.
