PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a physical format of an actual device of an external connection storage controller at high speed. SOLUTION: This storage system 100 has a storage controller 20 and a storage controller 40. The actual device 51 of the storage controller 40 is mapped to a virtual device 32 of the storage controller 20. The storage controller 20 has a port 64 transmitting control cylinder information written in a control information area of the actual device 51. It is only required to transmit at least the control cylinder information without needing transmission of zero data as format data transmitted to the storage controller 40 from the storage controller 20, thereby the high-speed format can be performed.
