PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology capable of decreasing a searching time of edit points for consecutive recording. SOLUTION: A recording and reproducing apparatus disclosed herein records/reproduces image data coded by the variable length coding system to/from many tracks on a recording tape medium, applies error correction coding processing to the coded image data by N tracks, records/reproduces the image data subjected to the error correction coding processing while carrying the tape medium, detects the edit point for the consecutive recording from which new image data are recorded in succession to the image data having already been recorded on the tape medium from the reproduced image data, reproduces the tape medium while carrying the tape medium at an n-multiple speed (n is an integer of≥2), detects the edit point from the image data reproduced at the n-multiple speed, reproduces the image data by the N tracks including the edit point and writes the reproduced image data to a memory while carrying the tape medium in a reverse direction to the direction at ordinary reproduction at an m-multiple speed (m is an optional number of 1/2 or below).
