PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method capable of advantageously producing a methylbenzyl alcohol with a halogenated nucleus which is useful as a raw material or an intermediate for producing agrochemicals, medicines, etc., in an industrial manner. SOLUTION: The method for producing the methylbenzyl alcohol with the halogenated nucleus represented by general formula (II) (wherein m is an integer of 0-3 and n is an integer of 1-4, with the proviso that m+n is an integer of 1-4) comprises hydrogenating a benzenedicarbaldehyde with a halogenated nucleus represented by general formula (I) (wherein m and n are the same as mentioned above).
