<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep engine speed from increasing in an undesirable way when either an HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) or other kind of vehicle that uses no disconnecting clutch between the engine and wheels is shifted to neutral by eliminating some or all of the loads applied to the engine when a transmission is shifted to neutral. <P>SOLUTION: Feed forward control is used which comprises a step for determining when a neutral transmission gear is selected and a step for adjusting engine parameters to control engine operation based on at least one predetermined condition when the neutral transmission gear is selected.
