PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a suspension system which prevents the length of a rod from gradually extending while a damping force which is generated in the contracting process does not become insufficient, can keep the neutral position of the piston of a shock absorber, and can actively generate the damping force in response to a vehicle state. SOLUTION: This suspension system is constituted in such a manner that the axle member which freely rotatably supports the wheels is connected with the car body through the shock absorber and a spring. In the suspension system, a rod length variation controlling means which makes the length of the rod of the shock absorber variable and controls the length of the rod based on the vehicle state is provided. Then, damping characteristics 1 in the stretching process of the shock absorber are reduced so that the damping characteristics 1 may become equal to damping characteristics 2 in the contracting process.
