PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer provided with a recorded medium type detection device capable of precisely and stably discriminating the type of the printed recording medium even when discriminating between plain paper and coated paper. SOLUTION: An illumination means uses ultraviolet light and other light having a longer wavelength. A photoelectric conversion means is provided with a diffused light receiving part for receiving the diffused light by the other light having the wavelength longer than that of the ultraviolet light and a specular reflection light receiving part receiving the specular reflection light. The diffused light by the ultraviolet light can be received by the diffused light receiving part. Part of the ultraviolet light can be received by the specular reflection light receiving part.
