PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder block capable of positively cooling an upper part and of cooling whole body by letting cooling water flow in the whole water jacket at a time of high speed rotation of an engine. SOLUTION: The water jacket 4 is provided around cylinder bores arranged in a plurality of banks, partition walls 5a, 5b are formed at a position between cylinder bores in the water jacket 4. An upper stage cooling water passage R1 is formed in the water jacket 4 above the partition wall parts 5a, 5b in parallel with each cylinder bore bank and a lower stage cooling water passage R2 is formed by communication holes 6a, 6b formed at a lower end of the partition wall parts 5a, 5b in the water jacket in parallel with each cylinder bore bank. Open close valves 7a, 7b opening and closing the communication holes 6a, 6b are provided in the lower stage cooling water passage R2. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
