PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a level of a lubrication oil in an engine correctly and surely, both under stop and operation of the engine. SOLUTION: The engine 10 is equipped with an oil stirring part 40 and a float type oil level detector 50 in a crank case 11. The float type oil level detector emits a detection signal of the oil level drop, by contacting a movable contact prepared in the float to a fixed contact when the level of the lubrication oil Lu falls off to lower limit level. The oil level detection device comprises the float type oil level detector, a first and a second determination means which decide a real level drop of the lubrication oil. The first determination means determines the oil level drop when a lifetime of the detected signal reaches a standard time during the engine is stopped. The second determination means determines the oil level drop when a frequency of the received detected signal reaches a standard frequency during the engine is in operation.
