PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passenger sensing device for an elevator capable of sensing accurately whether object to be detected exists or not in a predetermined region. SOLUTION: A distance sensor 2 projects a sensing beam 3 downward aslant to a hall. The projecting angle of the sensing beam 3 in a horizontal plane is arranged to make sweeping. The distance sensor 2 has a light projection part 4, a light reception part 5, and a sweeping means 6. The light reception part 5 receives a reflected beam 10 of the sensing beam 3 reflected by the object 9 to be detected. Also the light reception part 5 has a light receiving lens 11 to form image of the reflected beam 10 and an image forming position sensing part 12 arranged in a position where the lens 11 forms image of the reflected beam 10.
