The invention relates to surface-modified pearlescent pigments, the pearlescent pigments being provided on the surface with at least one organic phosphorus compound of the general formula (I) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>R<SUP>1</SUP>R<SUP>2</SUP>P (O) (OR<SUP>3</SUP>) (I) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> and/or of the general formula (II) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>R<SUP>1</SUP>P (O) (OR<SUP>3</SUP>) (OR<SUP>4</SUP>) (II) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> where R<SUP>1 </SUP>and R<SUP>2 </SUP>independently of one another are hydrogen or an organic radical having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, with the proviso that R<SUP>1 </SUP>and R<SUP>2 </SUP>are not simultaneously hydrogen, R<SUP>3 </SUP>and R<SUP>4 </SUP>independently of one another are H or alkyl having 1-10 carbon atoms. The invention further relates to a process for preparing these pearlescent pigments and also to their use.
