A torsion shaft for incorporating into the steering of a vehicle is made entirely of rubber or elastomer to provide a selected torsional flexibility. This is achieved by the selection of the rubber/elastomer and by the diameter of the torsion shaft. The optimum cross section of the torsion shaft is round with a diameter of between 10 and 20 mm.
