[Class 42 (i)] An electronic seaming machine has work feeding elements adapted to engage opposite sides of superposed plies of thermoplastic material, means for reciprocating them to engage and disengage the material and for giving them work-advancing and return movements, opposed electrodes, between which a very high frequency electrical field is established, located adjacent to the work-feeding means, and mechanism connected with the feeding elements for causing the electrodes to engage, remain in engagement with, and apply pressure to the material while the feeding elements are executing their reciprocatory and return movements.. The machine consists of a bed 1 from one end of which rises a hollow standard 2 carrying an overhanging arm 3 terminating in a head 4. A suitably-driven mainshaft 6 journalled in the bed 1 has a crank 10 connected by a pitman 11 to a crank arm 12 secured to a rockshaft 13 in the arm 3. The mainshaft 6 is also connected through a collar 17, carrying an adjustable eccentric 18, and pitman 20 with an upstanding feed-advance rocker-frame 23, the lower end of which is journalled on a shaft 25 secured in lugs 26 on the bed-plate. A pivotpin 28 journalled in bosses 27 on the rockerframe 23 has journalled thereon. ears 29 at the rearward end of a lower feed-bar 30, the forward end of which carries the shank of the lower four-motion feed-element 31 of a clampfeed mechanism. The latter has two spaced work-engaging sections 32, which operate through slots in a grounded lower electrode 34. A pin 38 having a strap 39 embracing a feedlift eccentric or crank-pin 40 at the end of the mainshaft 6 slides in a bore 37 in an arm 36 extending downwardly and forwardly from the feed-bar 30 and imparts rising and falling movements to the feed-element 31. An upper four-motion feed-element 42, having a bifurcated footplate 41 is attached to a vertical upper feed-bar 45, which depends from a stud 46 on a fulcrum plate 47. The latter has a boss which is apertured to receive a stud 50 on a collar 51 on a vertical electrode bar 53, journalled in bearings 55 for endwise reciprocation, and pressed downwards by an adjustable spring 58. At its lower end the electrode bar 53 carries a block 64 of insulating material, slotted to receive the shank of an upper electrode 65 which is disposed between the footplates 41 of the upper feed-element, and connected to the inner conductor 102 of a tuned co-axial cable 103. The fulcrum-plate 47 is also pivoted to a link 67, the other end of which is pivoted to a slide-block adjustably secured in a slot 70 in an upstanding crank arm 71 on a rock-shaft 72. A collar 75 on the latter has secured to it a slide-pin 77 which is telescopically disposed in a sleeve 79 pivoted on a crank-pin 80 mounted on a disc on the rock-shaft 13, an oscillatory movement thus being imparted to the fulcrum plate 47. Near its lower end, the feed-bar 45 is pivotally connected by a link 82 to one end of a crank-arm 83 depending from a rock-shaft 84, which, at its other end has a rearwardly extending crank-arm 85 connected by a link 86, to a slide-block 87 adjustably secured in a slot 88 in a crank-arm 89 extending from one end of a fulcrum pin 90 journalled in a boss on a lug on the bed 1. The other end of the pin 90 has a depending crank-arm 93 pivoted to a pitman 94, the other end of which embraces a feed-advance eccentric 95 on the mainshaft 6. The feed-element 42 and electrode-bar 53 are reciprocally urged toward the work, the fulcrum of the fulcrum-plate 47 shifting from the fulcrum-stud 50 to the pivotstud 46, according to whether the feed element 42 or electrode-bar 53 is in contact with the work. The members may be lifted from the work by a lifter-block 106 actuated by a lever 109, or by a treadle-operated lever. Specification 599,300 is referred to.
