An ion mobility spectrometer including: at least one ionization chamber 1, through which analyte-containing gas flows and is at least partially ionized by ionizing radiation from at least one radiation source 2; at least one separating region 8 lying downstream of the ionisation chamber 1, into which the partially ionised gas is introduced as ion carrier gas 4 and a virtually ion-free gas is introduced as drift gas 5, in such a way that, at least in the entrance zone of the separating region 8, a flow is established in which ion carrier gas 4 predominantly flows through cross-sectional regions 6, and drift gas 5 predominantly flows through other cross-sectional regions 7 and 7', whereby drift gas 5 and ion carrier gas 4 flow unidirectionally and the cross-sectional regions 6 through which ion carrier gas 4 predominantly flows are smaller at least in one dimension than the cross-sectional regions 7 and 7' through which drift gas 5 predominantly flows. |
