Carbon fibre-reinforced brake and clutch discs and a method of their manufacture

A method for the manufacture of a carbon fibre-reinforced ceramic brake or clutch disc for a motorised land vehicle comprises preparing a carbon fibre preform having dimensions which substantially correspond to those of the desired disc, densifying the preform with carbon in a single stage chemical vapour infiltration process and siliconising the densified preform by reaction with molten silicon. The average length of the carbon fibres within the preform may be at least 50 mm. The single stage chemical vapour infiltration process may be carried out for a total of 7-14 days. Also disclosed is a brake or clutch disc obtainable by the afore described method.
