The apparatus has an adjustment switch (61) which detects the continuation time of the close state of a tail gate. When the close state continuation time of tail gate at the time of operation of a handle shuts during repair determination time, an ECU (54) returns a lock mechanism (40) to a controllable state after a predetermined time of not being re-shut. An engagement mechanism (30) is fixed at one end to one side of a tail gate and having a claw (34) connectable to a striker (24) that is fixed to a vehicle body. The claw is urged to the direction supported by the tail gate and removes the engagement from the striker so that it can rotate freely. The lock mechanism controls the rotation of the claw to an energizing-force direction in normal close state or half-opening state of tail gate. The control of rotation of the claw by lock mechanism is released at the time of open requirement of tail gate.
