PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for improving the strength of coke obtained from coal comprising modified semi-caking coal or non-caking coal as a substitute for heavy caking coal which is coke raw material coal, and a technique for reducing the amount of the used valuable heavy caking coal, when the strength of the coke is approximately same. SOLUTION: This method for producing the coke is characterized by using a prescribed amount of substantially ash-free coal obtained by modifying coal having a carbonaceous content (d. a. f) of 60 to 95%, as a substitute for the heavy caking coal useful as a raw material coal for coke.
