An optical module has a optical (glass) fiber (110) and a light-emitting/receiving component (40), especially a semiconductor component. The light-emitting/receiving component (40) is mounted with an optically active layer-zone on the fiber end-surface (100), by coating one fiber end-surface (100) of the glass fiber (110) so that light from the optically active layer zone can be emitted through the fiber end-surface (100) into the glass fiber (110) and/or received from the glass fiber (110). An independent claim is included for a method for fabricating an optical module.
