The back- (6) and seat- (8) sections, each carry a magnet (46, 48). When the seat is folded up, it is secured relative to the back, by magnetic forces. The bearing support (18) of the back carries a first magnet; the corresponding bearing support of the seat carries a second magnet, the magnets being located in recesses in each case. Rod magnets are used and are located parallel to the pivotal axis and/or their end faces occupy spaced planes at right angles to this axis. When folded up, the moment set up by the magnets exceeds that set up by the weight of the seat, hence holding it up. The center of gravity of the seat lies forward of a vertical plane intersecting the axis. Various alternative fastening arrangements are described, to hang, fasten or hold the back onto the wall.
