The display unit (1) has a light source (3) on a circuit board (2), a light conductor (4) and a translucent display surface (5), whereby light can be radiated sideways into a light conductor behind the display surface to illuminate it. The light conductor is arranged at a distance from the circuit board so as to form a free space (10) between the circuit board and the light conductor. The light source has a base (12) separating a radiating element for radiating into the optical conductor from the circuit board.
