PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism and method for retaining paused knitting needle of a flatbed knitting machine, securely retaining a knitting needle in a needle channel in unselected needle state. SOLUTION: A butt 7a is installed on the needle jack 7 as a projection for receiving action of a cam mechanism. A spring part 7b is set on the distant side from an opening of the butt 7a on the needle jack 7, and the final end of the spring part 7b contacts with the bottom of the needle groove 5, and the adjacent part of the butt 7a is set in a state as elastically floating from the bottom of the needle groove 5. The spring part 7b is pushed in the needle groove 5 by pressing by a select jack 8 in unselected needle state. A projection 7c is installed on the lower part of the spring part 7b in the needle jack 7. The needle jack 7 is restricted not to make a slide displacement in the needle groove 5 by locking the projection 7c with a wire 9 when the wire 9 passes through a needle plate 4 responding to the projection 7c, and the needle jack 7 became in the unselected needle state at position B.
