PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of drying a softwood with high moisture content. SOLUTION: This invention relates to a method of drying the lumber, which comprises a softwood and is deposited in a drying chamber to be dried, by keeping the dry- and wet-bulb temperatures in the chamber to the prescribed values, respectively based on the temperature and moisture content of the softwood. The method is characterized by repeating a sequence of processes comprising initial temperature elevation, high temperature setting and heating suspension or further heating until reaching a target moisture content in a lumber. It is preferable that the indicator for changing to each subsequent process is the moisture content at the point for measuring its average, the measuring point is 35 mm in depth from the lumber surface, and both end faces and their four sides are covered with the tubular bodies when drying.
