PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the position of a recording medium even when a slipping is generated between a conveyor belt and the recording medium. SOLUTION: An apparatus for detecting the position of the recording medium comprises a conveying means 4 for conveying the recording medium 2 fed from a recording medium feeding part, a head unit 5 for forming an image on the recording medium 2 by delivering ink droplets on the recording medium 2 conveyed by the conveying means 4, a light projecting part 41 arranged on either one of the undersurface of a conveying path for the recording medium of the conveying means 4 or the outside of the conveying path and irradiating with an inclined light along the conveying path, a light receiving part 43 arranged on the other one thereof and receiving the irradiated light outputted from the light projecting part 41, and a position detecting means 45 for detecting the position of the recording medium based on a light receiving signal outputted from the light receiving part 43.
