A fuel cell system comprises a water content measurer (ST4, 8) and a flushing period (ST10) determination unit (ST9) based on the measured water content of the cell. Preferably the cell water content is measured on the basis of the current stop period and the past stoppage water content. An independent claim is also included for control of a fuel cell.
