The invention concerns a conductive or semi-conductive material whereof the surface is modified by a single layer of a phenyl group substituted by a controlled quasiliving free radical polymerization initiator or by an agent for controlling a free radical polymerization, said phenyl group being bound by a covalent phenyl-metal bond at said surface of the conductive or semi-conductive material and a method for making said material. The invention also concerns a conductive or semi-conductive material whereof the surface is modified by the presence of at least one functionalized polymer layer, and a method for preparing said material and the uses of said material advantageously in quartz crystal microbalances.
