PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic auto tensioner having excellent maintenance and preventiveness of degradation of peripheral equipment caused by splashed oil by recovering an operating fluid gradually accumulated from air flow flowing between a bellows and a cylindrical body, to prevent its splash. SOLUTION: The hydraulic auto tensioner is formed with a rugged part 24 with oil recovery grooves 24a formed in mesh by crisscross knurling work or other knurling work for forming projecting parts 24b of small rhombic shape or the like in parallel on a contact surface of the bellows 28 at the outer periphery of the cylindrical body 27 whose lower part is formed in a smaller diameter than the upper part, and provided with grooves 28b extending along a cylinder length direction, in a cylindrical body contact surface inside the bellows 28. Even if air containing vapor of the operating fluid forms oil drops in a clearance between the cylindrical body 27 and the bellows 28, most of the oil drops cannot go over all the oil recovery grooves 24a arranged in mesh before leaking to the outside together with the air flow and therefore do not leak to the outside.
