The method involves calculating a characteristic value of one of components in a specified color space of an image with respect to image data from a camera (1). A determination is made to find whether or not the characteristic value stored in a characteristic value-data memory satisfies a predetermined condition. An evaluation is made to find whether or not the vehicle travels in a tunnel based on the determination result. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a program for evaluation of roadway types and represented on a medium (2) a device for evaluation of roadway types.
