<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an aurora generator so as to generate an aurora curtain which can be deformed into a drape-like shape without the need for a shield plate near an electrode or center glass. <P>SOLUTION: (A) is a conventional vacuum discharge device shown for the purpose of comparison. Indeterminate form of light emission 5 is generated between an electrode 2 and an electrode 3. When a coil 6 for shaping is provided as shown in (B) and a magnetic field (a magnetic line m) in the Z-axis direction is given, the indeterminate form of light emission is shaped into a plate and a curtain-like light emission 7 is formed. The thickness size of the plate-like light emission varies in accordance with the magnetic field intensity. Further, by adding a magnetic field in the Y-axis direction to the curtain-like light emission 7 or by flexing the linear electrode 2, the plate-like light emission can be deformed into drape-like emission.
