PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a practical method for producing an alkyl ester of a fatty acid which can be carried out with the use of an inexpensive solid catalyst at an inexpensive operating cost as well. SOLUTION: The method for producing an alkyl ester of a fatty acid by transesterification of oils and fats with an alcohol in the presence of calcium oxide comprises a pretreatment step of adjusting the water content in the oils and fats to≤0.03 wt.% and the amount of free fatty acids to≤0.05 wt.% before performing the transesterification and performing the transesterification of the oils and fats treated in the pretreatment step with an alcohol in a fixed catalyst bed reactor filled with calcium oxide.
