PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion generator with small power consumption and a little variation of ion generation cycle, and to provide an air conditioner. SOLUTION: In the ion generator 1 comprising an ion generation element 8 for generating ions by discharge, a first booster circuit 21 for boosting dc inputs, and a second booster circuit 22 for boosting the output of the first booster circuit 21 to the discharge voltage of the ion generation element 8, the second booster circuit 22 comprises a charging capacitor 2 which charges the output voltage of the first booster circuit 21; a discharge switch element 6 for making the charging capacitor 2 discharge when a charging voltage of the charging capacitor 2 reaches the predetermined value; a resistor 23 connected in series with the charging capacitor 2; and a shunt regulator 16 where the voltage across the resistor 23 is input into the Ref terminal. Depending on the voltage drop of the resistor 23 due to the increase and decrease of charging current of the charging capacitor 2, the shunt regulator 16 is turned on or off so that the amount of pressure rise of the first booster circuit 21 is varied to make the charging current generally uniform.
