DATA STORAGE MEDIUM AND METHOD FOR FORMING THEREOF

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data storage medium attaining high recording density and a high data transfer rate by solving a defect of a conventional technique and to provide a method for forming thereof.

SOLUTION: Multi-dimensional and multilevel recording and storage are made possible. In the data storage medium having a substrate, a first recording layer and a second recording layer, the first and the second recording layers respectively have a plurality of data storage locations and the locations have physical characteristics changeable through at least two states for indicating data values. A first and second physical characteristics are different from each other. The first and the second recording layers are structurally supported by the substrate. A processed beam having the first and the second physical characteristics is directed toward the first and the second recording layers to indicate first and second data values. A single laser beam can be used and it is not necessary to perform focusing again between recording layers.
