PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of an optical retardation element which has an optically anisotropic layer of highly minute and complex orientation pattern, is easily manufactured and is superior in practicality.

SOLUTION: The optical retardation element has orientation films 12, 14, 16 and optical anisotropic layers 13, 15, 17 on a substrate, where the orientation films 12, 14, 16 contains at least one kind of compound, having photoreactive groups and the optical anisotropic layers 13, 15, 17 have at least three kinds of regions in which the fast axis or the slow axis is different from each other.
