PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stairway elevating/lowering machine easy for the execution work of mounting a rail or the like, less costly, compact, excellent in space efficiency, and not obstructive for a person using a stairway when the machine is not in use. SOLUTION: The stairway elevating/lowering machine comprises upper and lower guide rails 54 fixed to a substantially vertical wall surface and provided along the inclination of a stairway, and a plurality of drive bars 78 fixed to the wall surface at a predetermined spacing at the inclination opposite to the direction of the inclination, and further comprises a body 12 movable along the guide rails 54, a foldable loading unit 14 provided on the body 12 to load an article to be conveyed, and an upper rail supporting part 32 and a lower rail supporting part 34 mounted on the body 12, engaged with the guide rails 54, and provided in a movable manner. It further comprises a drive roller belt 42 provided on the body 12 facing the drive bars 78 and driven by a motor 36a, and a drive roller 44 fixed to the drive roller belt 42 at a predetermined spacing and successively engaged with the drive bar 78.
