Anaerobic treatment of cellulose-containing waste comprising: (a) mechanical comminution of the waste; (b) suspending the product in processing water; (c) decomposition, hygienization and/or methanization of organic components in a biological treatment stage; (d) separating the residual composted residue into a plastic-containing and a cellulose-rich fraction; and (e) working-up the fractions to produce recyclable products or products which can be incinerated or disposed of as landfill. An independent claim is included for apparatus for carrying out the treatment method comprising a comminuting unit (4), biological treatment units (7, 9), a separator (10) which produces plastic-containing and cellulose-containing fractions and plastic treating (11.1 - 11.5) and cellulose treating (12.1 - 12.4) systems.
