PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pile driver which meets both requirements in a long leader mode and a short leader mode. SOLUTION: According to the structure of the pile driver, a lower leader 4b is arranged on the front of a base machine 3 in a derricking manner, and a lower leader backstay cylinder 11 is arranged between the lower leader 4b and the base machine 3. Then an upper leader backstay cylinder 10 is rotatably mounted on the base machine 3, and the upper leader backstay cylinder 10 and an upper leader are detachably attached to each other. When construction work is carried out by using only the lower leader, a hydraulic system 16a is interrupted, and the upper leader backstay cylinder 10 is tilted to the rear of the base machine to be housed on the upper portion of the base machine 3. On the other hand when construction work is carried out by connecting the upper leader to the lower leader and mounting a top sieve 6 on the upper portion of the upper leader, the upper leader backstay cylinder 10 and the upper leader are connected together, and the hydraulic system 16a is communicated, to thereby erect/lay the leader 4 by using both the backstay cylinders 10, 11.
