PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a melanogenesis inhibitor capable of effectively inhibiting melanogenesis, and to provide a bleaching cosmetic capable of preventing tanning of the skin caused by ultraviolet light, excellent in a bleaching effect, and having high safety. SOLUTION: This melanogenesis inhibitor contains hydrogenated sclareol or its acylated derivative as an active ingredient, wherein the hydrogenated sclareol is obtained by reducing sclareol which is one kind of diterpene alcohol contained in an extract of Salvia sclarea of a labiate plant.
