The invention relates to an automatic machine for determining the amount of suspended and volatile solids in water and sludge. The machine comprises a bank (1) for bottles containing water or sludge to be analyzed, an anhydrous store (2) for membrane filters and plates, a weighing device (3), a filtration ramp (4), a drying stove and oven (5,6), an anhydrous store (7) for frames (C) adapted to carry on said filters and plates; the machine is equipped with an automatic handling system with a first robot (8) adapted t homogenize the content of the bottles, take controlled samples and deposit said samples on the filtration ramp (4); a second robot (9) to handle the filters and plates; a frame manipulator (10) to displace the frames between the respective store (7) and the drying stove and oven (5,6).
