<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a white light of wide color band by easily mixing and uniformizing three primary colors emitted from three organic EL layers. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight for a liquid crystal display is constituted by stacking a plurality of EL units 21 on the upper surface of a transparent substrate. Each EL unit 21 comprises first to third organic EL layers A, B, and C. The first to third organic EL layers A, B, and C are concentrically arranged, while th second and third organic EL layers B, C surround the first and second organic EL layers.
