The device has an evaluation device (1) evaluating an actual insertion situation of a tool to determine a characteristic of the situation and a characteristic parameter of the tool. The evaluation device compares the parameter of the tool with the characteristic of the situation. A transponder (4a) is arranged in the tool and possesses a characteristic value that is assigned to the parameter of the tool. The evaluation device contactlessly determines the characteristic value of the transponder and infers the parameter of the tool based on the determined value of the transponder. An independent claim is also included for a method for assisting a situation-based insertion of a tool.
