Conversion devices sample the input and output information of the electronic controller and convert it into numbers for display. A diagnostic operating mode is fed into the conversion arrangement via an input unit. A code corresp. to the diagnostic operating mode is held in a memory. A recall unit acquires the code from memory according to the diagnostic operating mode. The code and the numeric information are simultaneously displayed (31). The input unit can be in the form of a keyboard (32).
