A lamp includes an envelope of a vitreous composition, having a pinched part at at least one end to form a seal isolating an interior of the envelope from the environment of the envelope, and an arrangement for conducting electrical current to the interior of the envelope, having a section embedded in one of the pinched parts of the envelope and a section external to the envelope. At least part of embedded section of the arrangement for conducting electrical current is at least partly surrounded by a composition including at least one of phosphorus in a non-volatile form and an acid thereof.
