A method for controlling start of a common rail engine is provided to smoothly and quickly start the engine even when the engine is worn out or the weather is varied. A method for controlling start of a common rail engine, comprises a first step(S10) of calculating a request torque on the basis of engine RPM, coolant temperature, and air density; a second step(S11 to S13) of increasing the present torque by a predetermined rate if engine RPM has failed in reaching an operating RPM within a predetermined time after applying the calculated request torque; and a third step(S14,S15) of converting an engine start state into an operating state if engine RPM has reached an operating RPM within a predetermined time after applying the increased torque.
