<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element which is excellent in the in-plane distribution of retardation of transmitted light, less in a transmitted wave front aberration and uniform in a polarization state when using the liquid crystal optical element arraged in an optical path of a diverging light ray or a converging light ray with uniform phases emitted from a laser light source. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element is constituted to fulfill followings: two liquid crystal layers each of which has directors with pretilt in the vicinity of a pair of opposing transparent substrates mutually nearly parallel and has retardation of the transmitted light varied corresponding to the level of voltage applied between electrodes, are laminated; liquid crystal layers are disposed in such a way that orientation directions of liquid crystal molecules in the first and second liquid crystal layers on voltage application are inclined and aligned in mutually reversed directions with respect to surfaces of the transparent substrates; and absolute values of inclined angles are nearly equal to each other.
