PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having satisfactory display quality of transmission display and also reflection display.

SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device provided with a transmission type liquid crystal display panel holding a liquid crystal layer between the first and second substrates disposed opposite to each other, the first optical element OD1 provided on the outer surface the first substrate opposite to the liquid crystal layer holding surface and including the first polarizing plate PL1 and the second optical element provided on the outer surface of the second substrate opposite to the liquid crystal layer holding surface and including the second polarizing plate having a transmission axis nearly orthogonal to a transmission axis of the first polarizing plate is characterized in that the first optical element OD1 further includes a reflection type polarizing plate RPL having a transmission axis T2 nearly parallel to the transmission axis T1 of the first polarizing plate PL1 and a semitransmission reflection layer RT reflecting a portion of incident light and transmitting a portion of the light.
