PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device for an endoscope which is capable of dimming and shielding illumination light by a dimming device. SOLUTION: The light source device for the endoscope comprises: a light source ML for supplying the illumination light to the incidence end face of a light guiding fiber extended inside a universal tube from the insertion part of the endoscope; a turning diaphragm 52 provided with a dimming opening 53 through which the illumination light can be transmitted and a light shielding part 54 through which the illumination light can not be transmitted, and turned on a plane orthogonal to an advancing direction of the illumination light between the light source and the incidence end face; and rotation control mechanisms C, DM and 51 for rotating the turning diaphragm between a position at which an illumination light quantity to be emitted to the incidence end face is dimmed by the dimming opening and a light shielding position at which the illumination light is completely shielded by the light shielding part.
