PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an impact printer capable of preventing a printing omission, damage to an ink ribbon, etc. from being caused by a break in the ink ribbon, while suppressing an increase in cost. SOLUTION: The transmittance of the ink ribbon 22 is measured by means of a transmission sensor 26 which comprises a light-emitting element 26a and a light-receiving element 26b, arranged with the ink ribbon 22 between them. When the measured transmittance is lower/higher than reference transmittance, a determination part 31 determines that the ink ribbon 22 is broken, and that effect is displayed on a display part 50.
