A discharge lamp operation device includes a plurality of switch circuits (3, 4) connected by one-to-one correspondence to each of discharge lamps (5, 6); a plurality of light connection circuits (9, 10) connected by one-to-one correspondence to each of the switch circuits for turning ON/OFF the switch circuits; a plurality of current detection circuits (7, 8) connected by one-to-one correspondence to each of the discharge lamps for detecting current flowing into the discharge lamps; and a control circuit (11) for judging whether the discharge lamps are ON according to the current detected by the current detection circuits, controlling the light connection circuits according to the judgment result, successively turning ON the discharge lamps in the ascending order of the turn ON voltage excluding the discharge lamp having the highest turn ON voltage among the discharge lamps, turning OFF the discharge lamps which have been turned ON, and, after turning ON the discharge lamp having the highest turn ON voltage, turning ON the remaining all the discharge lamps again.
