A linear motor capable of maintaining a specified driving force even if it is displaced in a non-driving direction crossing perpendicularly to the primary driving force generating direction of the linear motor. The linear motor comprises permanent magnets (1) forming a magnetic field and coils (2) disposed oppositely to the permanent magnets (1) through a magnetic space. Either of the permanent magnets (1) and the coils (2) form a rotor, and the others form a stator. The length of the permanent magnets (1) in a direction crossing perpendicularly to the direction for generating a driving force produced in the rotor is set so that, even if the rotor is displaced in the perpendicularly crossing direction, the end parts of the coils (2) in the perpendicularly crossing direction are not extruded from the end parts of the permanent magnets (1) in the perpendicularly crossing direction.
